Michelin X One Tires + Energy Guard AerodynamicsView Full Report
MVT Solutions Certified™ testing found the combined savings of Michelin X One WBS tires with Michelin Energy Guard trailer aerodynamics saved in total, 17.01 gal/1000 miles results in 1701 gallons saved in 100,000 miles. At $3.056 per gallon (2019 average retail price of diesel) this equates to $5,103. These are enormous saving and highlight how much fuel and money can be saved in tires and trailer aerodynamics.
Note: the Energy Guard savings of 10.31 gal/1000 miles were very similar to the 10.00 gal/1000 values measured in 2019. The difference of 0.31 gal/1000 miles is very small; approximately equivalent to a tractor fender mirror. However, the percent values from 2020 to 2019 differ by a greater amount at 8.75% and 7.65% respectively. The lower percent in 2020 was not due to lower fuel savings, it was due to errors that occur when measuring fuel savings as a percent. The 2020 vehicle consumed more fuel (i.e. lower MPG). As a result, an almost equal amount of fuel saved resulted in a lower percent since percent is calculated as savings divided by total fuel consumed. The topic is explained more within the report. The 2020 vehicle consumed more fuel due to a higher GVW, which had no impact on the aerodynamic fuel savings.
Results for Any Carrier
Carriers can trust the test results are reliable for other tractor-trailer configurations, as they are not specific to MVT’s fleet. During testing, vehicles were configured to represent the current industry-standard and did not include wheel covers or tractor wheel side fairings. Carriers can find directions on calculating their own fuel savings in the report or can contact MVT Solutions with questions.
